I’m a real magazine junkie. This comes as no surprise to those who know me, as I am usually found in grocery stores figuring out which magazine to buy instead of finding milk, bread and all other things I need. The thing with magazines is that they inspire me so much more than anything else. Give me a new Elle Decoration and within an hour, I’m ready to redecorate my whole apartment. Or fashion magazines make me want to upgrade my whole wardrobe at once. Over time magazines have helped me find my own style. Or rather, figure out that my style is more than what I’m into at the moment, it’s what is left when you take away the trend element and look at what I always come back too.

Here are my favorite magazines:

Lula Girl of My Dreams: A wonderful bi-annual magazine (how I wish it was monthly, sigh) that is all about amazing photography, nostalgia, fashion and lifestyle.

Norwegian Costume: A fashion magazine that is better than anything else. Always giving you the latest trends without interruptions! It’s just fashion!

Norwegian ELLE: I love Norwegian Elle because of the lifestyle pages in the last section. Always a beautiful home decoration editorial, always something delicious to cook at home, and always a great travel story from somewhere far away. This is the reason why I think Norwegian ELLE is better than all the other ELLEs! (I think I have to do some scans soon for those of my readers that are not Norwegian! )

Frankie Magazine: I love frankie, but unfortunately, I haven’t been able to find it in Norway yet. You can subscribe online though, but that doesn’t give me the right feel. I really recommend their newsletter, it’s always inspiring, maybe one of the best newsletters I’ve ever received! And later tonight, I’m ordering the Frankie Photo Album! If you haven’t ordered it yet, you should!

British Vogue: Is my favorite treat when I’m going to reward myself. I think their layouts are great and the stories usually fit my style and wardrobe. I love the More Dash than Cash series!

How to materialize it:

1. Keep them. Old magazines are great to browse through if you need instant inspiration. Trends change, but style doesn’t! I don’t like to cut in mine, but how about cutting out your all time favorite articles and create an inspiration journal? A visual wishlist could also be something, although I think mine would be huge! Make envelopes, paper cranes, snow crystals or other paper goods! Or how about wrapping your christmas presents in something different this year?

2. Map your style. Find your top then fashion editorials and put them side by side on the floor. Figure out what they have in common. Is it the colors? The designer? The cut? The use of accessories? Or a combination? Think about the clothing you already own and wear everyday? Do they match? Or do you need to clean your wardrobe and think new? Cut out the missing pieces and make a visual shopping list! This technique can also be used to find your interior design style!

3. What to wear today? This little game will decide. Take a random magazine and open it on a random page. Try to use one of the elements (or all of them) in today’s outfit. If you don’t have anything similar, try to combine the colors the same way or just adopt one of the details. This usually helps when on those days when I have nothing to wear… And it’s a lot of fun too!
