I have been playing this song from the swedish singer/songwriter Melissa Horn all the time lately! Her lyrics are in swedish, but she has the most amazing lines. Here are a little translation of the chorus (I apologize for the lack of rhyme!) : Did you let her come closer? Was she more beautiful than me? There are days when I think more about her than on you. … How can you love someone who has loved someone before?

I’m sorry for being so absent lately, but I have rediscovered the joy of reading once again. I’m in the middle of Siri Hustvedt‘s The Sorrows of an American and I can’t put it down! The novel starts with a description of an old study. It’s full of notes, old books, archive drawers, index cards and dusty items. I found this so inspiring! As you can see from my previous posts, I am really into science and vintage these days. Here’s a little piece of writing I did, trying to put the inspiration at use and challenge my descriptive skills:

When I close my eyes, I can envision a room with a window with white curtains who fill the room with natural light. The walls are covered with heavy book shelves and archive drawers. In the shelves there are books with drawings in them, science books, some classical literature and lots of notebooks filled with handwriting. There’s a huge old desk by the window, and it’s loaded with open books and notes. In between the paper there’s a feather ink pen and an old wooden globe. On a small table close to the door there’s a small collection of bird skulls, a camera and a candle. Everything is covered with dust and the room smells old.

Wouldn’t this be the perfect place for a treasure hunt?

A Little Film from Amanda Gilligan on Vimeo.

I love this video by Mocking bird! She was also the one who put me in the direction of the new Digital Harinezumi. Isn’t it cute? And so tiny it can be taken anywhere! And I love the fact that it’s unpredictable like film, yet practical (and cheap) like digital! And so it happens that I have added yet another item to my christmas wish list. Another camera (again). A girl can dream, right?

I love toy cameras, but unfortunately film processing is expensive here. But I have found another solution though! The Olympus PEN EP-2! You can actually take multiple exposures with it or set it to pinhole setting or other creative modes. And it takes great regular pictures too, and the size is so much more convenient than my digital SLR (canon eos 400d). The only negative thing? The price tag. But I have been a very good girl this year… ;)

ps. I’m sorry for the slow posting recently, my exams are in less than a week! I have some exciting news to be announced tomorrow though!

I received my copy of Chris Cramer’s Romance today, and I love it so much! You have probably seen all of these before, but I just had to share my favorites. I had to go through pouring rain to get this at the post office this morning, but it was so worth it. They are amazing!

As I mentioned yesterday, I have big plans for this book! Actually, I’m planning to tear it apart and use the pictures as a kind of wallpaper on my living room wall. I’ll post the pictures as soon as I get it done. I have to buy another copy of the book though, for a book like this is too pretty to tear apart completely! :) I’m also waiting for the Frankie Photo Album. Takes a while to ship from the other side of the world… If you know of any photographers you think I might like, please share!

I’m so tired tonight, so stay tuned for another advice post tomorrow. In the meantime, check out these links:

I’m in love with the illustrations by Anna Rusakova. Her work is gorgeous! In particular, I love her bird drawings and her cute little bunnies! Too see more of her work, check out her livejournal and her portfolio. I first saw her work through the livejournal community jr__nal, which is a community for sharing your journal pages. It’s a great source of inspiration too! I also love to browse the Moleskine groups on flickr for inspiration.

How to materialize it:

1. There’s really just one thing to do. Start drawing in your own notebook! If you can’t draw, now is the time to start. Remember, practice makes perfect! Or check out some drawing tips and classes online here.
